RIO HONDO, TX—Rio Hondo ISD is enhancing its STEM career pathways after acquiring a first-of-its-kind, mobile engineering classroom for its high school campus last August.

The solar-powered mobile unit, which was obtained through the Texas Workforce Commission Jobs & Education for Texans (JET) Grant Program, is fully equipped with a 3D printer, computers, monitors, industrial robots and augmented reality headsets.

According to Rio Hondo ISD Superintendent Raul J. Treviño, the mobile classroom allows students to learn advanced STEM concepts by utilizing university-grade technology throughout their high school education.
“Through the Rio Hondo High School Mobile Engineering Classroom, we are amplifying our programs of study to lead students to fill high-wage, in-demand jobs,” Superintendent Treviño said. “The unique learning experiences will give students a leg up in the workforce and future careers.”

Rio Hondo ISD’s Career and Technical Education Director Lisa Leal said the classroom is creating simulated workforce experiences through its augmented reality technology.

“Students are able to engage in learning using technology that they don’t normally have access to,” Leal said. “For example, students can tour factories and operate advanced technology. Compounded with engaging curriculum and other learning resources, students are receiving workforce and advanced learning experiences at Rio Hondo ISD.”
