HP breaks its own printers (again) with firmware update

HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e printer

HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e is affected.

A firmware upgrade has rendered HP OfficeJet Printers inoperable for weeks. As reported by Bleeping Computer on Saturday, a recent firmware update inadvertently left many users with devices that won’t print and will only display a dreaded blue screen.

HP’s forums are flooded with complaints from users who claim that their printer has stopped working and that the screen is now blue, with “83C0000B” displayed. This problem dates back to May 8, 2008. According to Bleeping computer, this issue affects OfficeJet 902x owners.

At least one HP rep had suggested on the forum that the problem was due to “a printer head issue.” Bleeping Computer reports that the problem is related to a May firmware update.

“Just spoke with the Customer Service. They confirmed that the firmware problem is occurring worldwide. “They will not have any news until Tuesday 16th. So, at this moment, there is nothing that can be done,” wrote an HP customer on the support forums on May 12.

HP said that only a small number of users are affected. However, support threads reveal the issue affects dozens of clients in the US as well as Australia, France Germany, New Zealand and Poland.

HP Responses

HP has told its customers that they will be able to print at different dates in the month. However, HP has not yet issued an official solution.

Customers have become frustrated by the apparent delays in responses and the purported promises of fixing problems at dates which have passed. They have also reconsidered HP products.

On May 12, one user wrote:

They told me that they do not have a fix for this firmware problem at the moment. The customer service representative said that they may have a solution by next Tuesday. They said I should wait until next Tuesday to send the printer back to Amazon to get my refund.

HP sent a press release to Bleeping computer that shed some light on the issue.
