Government Printer claims lack of security for ballot paper printing


COLOMBO (News 1st); The Government Printer claims that not enough police protection was provided for the printing of ballot papers.

Ganga Liyanage (head of the Department of Government Printing) told News 1st the delay in printing ballot papers for the Local Government Election was a result.

According to the Government Printer, only two officers were stationed at main gate as of Monday (20th) evening.

She stated that a 65-member police force was required to ensure security during the printing of ballot papers.

She stated that all appropriate agencies were informed of the requests.

On Monday (20),  Sri Lanka’s National Election Commission has informed the Supreme Court that obstacles have arisen with regard to conducting the Local Government Election on the 9th of March 2023 as planned. 

The Government Printer informed the Elections Commission that she cannot release the ballot papers until Rs. 410.6 Million has been paid to the Department of Government Printing. The Supreme Court also noted the motion of the National Election Commission.

In its motion, The National Election Commission noted that the Inspector-General of Police had not provided security for the printing process of ballot papers. Additionally, it stated that the IGP indicated that funds are required to conduct the election. These funds will be approximately three times those that were previously available to Sri Lanka Police during elections.
