Comparison of the Epson Stylus Pro 7900 to the Stylus Pro 7880

Meridian Cyber Solutions announced the 7900 Stylus Pro on October 15, 2008, through an agreement with Epson America. Many people are now wondering if the Epson 880 printer will be replaced with the Epson 7900. Epson has introduced a 24 inch professional printer. How do they compare with the Epson 88080 and the Epson 7900?

The Epson 7880 has been a reliable printer for commercial, professional, and fine artists. The 7880 is a great choice for professional inkjet printers because of its excellent print quality, color gamut, flexibility and performance. There are no compromises when you purchase an Epson 78080.

What is it that makes the Epson Stylus Pro7900 so special? The 7880 was a great printer, but Epson has made substantial improvements to the 7900, including improved print quality, color gamut and ease-of-use.

Epson’s 7900 Stylus Pro has seen the introduction of the HDR, High Dynamic Range, ink set. It includes green and orange inks. The HDR ink set also includes long-awaited auto-switching matte and photo-black inks. Users can choose from three sizes of cartridges: 150 ml 300 ml and 700 ml. The Epson 700ml cartridges boast the lowest ink cost in Epson history. This is compared to the Epson 7280’s maximum ink cartridge capacity of 220 ml.

Ink: The 7900 10 HDR High Dynamic Range inks include matte black, photo black, and the new additions of orange and green. This is an increase of 11 inks compared to the 8 of the 7880. (Note: Matte Black and Photo Black are a long-awaited feature.

Print Head: While the 7900 uses a TFP (Thin Film Piezo) technology, the 7880 uses an older MicroPiezo AMC tech. Both print heads have an ink repelling coating, but the 7900 is larger with 360 nozzles 10 inks. The 7880 has 180 nozzles 8 inks. The Stylus Pro 7900 offers nozzle verification, cleaning and maintenance that is not available with the 7880.

Speed: The larger 7900 print head speeds are nearly twice that of the 7880. A 20 by 30 inch print printed at 1440×720 dpi High Speed takes 12 mins on the 7880 while it takes 6 minutes 39 second on the 7900.

Features that make the 7900 easier to use: There are several improvements in the 7880. They include: spindle free roll media loading (no longer spindles); rotary cutter instead of a knife cutter, which allows you to cut even thick media like canvas; and ePlaten technology, which eases and accurately loads paper and media.

While the 7880 will still be a strong contender in the 24-inch professional inkjet printer market, the Epson Stylus Pro 7900 is a significant improvement that professionals will find compelling.
